چکیده

Healthy People: At present there are 30 named Bartonella species and 3 subspecies. Bartonella are mainly transmitted to mammalian reservoir host species via arthropod ectoparasite vectors such as fleas, ticks, lice and biting flies. An excellent review of the worldwide distribution of the 30 Bartonella species was recently published. Interestingly and fortunately, Bartonella bacilliformis, the most deadly human Bartonella species, is confined to regions of high altitudes of South America, probably due to the restricted range of it’s arthropod vector, the sand fly. Untreated cases of Bartonella bacilliformis infections in the Andes mountains have a very high mortality of 30%. However, worldwide Bartonella henselae is the most common species found in cats, dogs and humans.

Sonicated diagnostic immunoblot for bartonellosis.

Two simple Bartonella bacilliformis immunoblot preparation methods were developed. Antigen was prepared by two different methods: sonication of whole organisms or glycine extraction. Both methods were then tested for sensitivity and specificity. Well-defined control sera were utilized in the development of these diagnostic immunoblots, and possible cross-reactions were thoroughly examined. Sera...

The History of Bartonella Infections of the Eye

● RESULTS: A number of novel Bartonella species have been identified over the past decade. Although cat and flea exposure appear to be the main risk factors for contracting ...
